It’s Raining Stress: 3 Ways to Manage It!

Have you ever found yourself so stressed that you yelled at your spouse or ate your body weight in your preferred dessert?  Hans Selye, an endocrinologist who spent his career studying stressors on live organism once said, “it’s not stress that kills us, it’s our reaction to it.” This is not your typical blog where I tell you to drink more water or get enough sleep to ease your cortisol levels, although those two habits help tremendously. Today I am excited to share with you some not so common ways to manage your everyday stress.

1. Create a To-Do List

So often we may experience overwhelming feelings like we are constantly behind the schedule – there’s too much to do and not enough time. Writing all of your responsibilities down for the day can be an effective way of calming your brain by pulling the cluster of information out of your head and laying it out in front of you. Then, you can number your tasks from the most important ones to the least important ones for that day. A to-do list provides you with a black-and-white game plan on how to tackle your day and gives you the confidence that you are more than capable in result relieving some of that built-up stress.

2. Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries can help to relieve your stress tremendously. If you know you have a busy week coming up then you might need to decline the request to participate in your church’s bake sale or the potluck. Some days feel like you are being pulled in all directions at the same time; during these times focus on your most important tasks and let go of the extra stuff.

3. Clean Your Space

A physically clean house or workspace can affect your mental health in a positive way – giving you more clarity and peace. Studies reveal that a cluttered home or a workspace can lead to a spike in cortisol, your stress hormone – resulting in confusion and distractions.

To close, stress is an inevitable strain that affects the body physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Nevertheless, your reaction to it can make all the difference to your mental health. Instead of allowing yourself to spiral due to high cortisol levels – use the mechanisms shared above to create a game plan for yourself.
